Young man arguing with his mother

A 20-year-old man found out his mom had pulled more than $120,000 out of the college fund his grandmother set up for him. The money was supposed to carry him through school and give him a head start on adult life.

He hasn’t confronted her yet. He’s furious, but he’s also unsure what he can do now that so much of the money is already gone.

A Gift From His Grandmother

When he was 5, his grandmother opened a college savings account for him and put $150,000 into it. His parents never added anything, so the entire balance came from her.

He’s deeply grateful for that gift. It was meant to give him security and the freedom to focus on his education without worrying about debt.

A Mother Who Struggles With Money

His mom has a long history of being bad with money. She works part time, by choice rather than for health reasons, and still earns around $70,000 a year.

On top of that, his grandmother sends her about $80,000 a year. His grandmother also bought her a house outright, but his mom later took out a $300,000 loan against it.

Help From the Rest of the Family

His uncle now pays the mortgage on that house. Between her income, his grandmother’s support, and his uncle covering the loan, his mom has more financial help than most people ever get.

That’s part of why the missing money stings so badly. Even with all that support, she still turned to the account that was meant for her son.

A Balance That Didn’t Add Up

He’s always been careful with money, so he pushed to set up a meeting with the company that manages his 529 account. The last time he’d checked, in May, the balance was around $158,000.

Even then, something felt off. After roughly 15 years in the account, he would’ve expected far more growth than about $8,000 on top of the original gift.

$37,000 Gone Since June

At the meeting, the advisor told him the account now held about $121,000. That meant $37,000 had disappeared since June alone.

He was shocked. He hadn’t approved any withdrawals and had no idea the money was being taken out.

$121,000 in Withdrawals

He downloaded the account’s app to look at the full history. The records only went back to October 2024, but the withdrawals since then added up to around $121,000.

That’s money he’ll likely never see again. Even if he didn’t know exactly how the account was set up, he’d always understood it was meant for him.

Accounts like this are often controlled by a parent on paper, even when the money was given for a child. That can leave the student with little say over withdrawals, which may be how his mom was able to take so much without his knowledge.

Plans Built Around That Money

He’d planned for that money to cover all of his schooling. He also wanted to put some of it into retirement accounts and use the rest to start his adult life on solid ground.

He’s been doing everything he can to stay ahead financially. He takes classes online to keep costs down and has worked several internships so he’ll be ready to support himself after graduation.

His grandmother has already made it clear she won’t give him more money. With the rest of the family growing frustrated with his mom, he doesn’t expect anyone else to replace what was lost.

A Conversation He Hasn’t Had Yet

He hasn’t talked to his mom about the withdrawals. He’s angry and hurt, and he doesn’t know how a conversation like that would even begin.

He keeps thinking about how much easier life would feel if the money were still there. Now he’s left trying to figure out what steps he can take, and whether confronting his mom will get any of it back or just break an already strained relationship even further.
