A woman has been watching her sister-in-law’s dog for free since February, about once a month, whenever her sister-in-law travels for work or goes on a getaway. Each time she asked about getting help with even the dog food, she was told family doesn’t charge family.
So when she asked her sister-in-law to watch her cat for one weekend and was quoted $50 a day, she went back through her texts, added up 14 days of dog sitting, and sent a $700 invoice. Now her sister-in-law won’t speak to her, and her brother wants her to apologize.

Watching Her Brother’s Dog Since February
Her brother’s wife has been dropping off her dog at her apartment since February. It happens about once a month.
Most trips last a night or two. Sometimes, if her sister-in-law travels farther away, the dog stays for three days.
She doesn’t mind the dog itself. He’s sweet and easy to like.
Walks, Schedules, and a Sweet Dog
Still, caring for him takes real work. She walks him twice a day and rearranges her schedule to make sure he doesn’t tear up her apartment while she’s at work.
Professional dog sitting can be expensive. Many sitters charge $40 to $75 or more per day, depending on the area and level of care.
Over months, that time and effort adds up. She’s been doing it without being paid.
Family Doesn’t Charge Each Other
Whenever she asked if her sister-in-law could at least cover the dog’s food, the answer was always the same. Her sister-in-law said they were family, and family doesn’t charge each other.
That ended the conversation every time. She didn’t push it any further.
She figured it was part of helping family. She assumed the same attitude would go both ways.
One Weekend Away and a Cat to Feed
Last week, she planned a weekend trip to visit a friend. She asked her sister-in-law if she could watch her cat while she was gone.
Her sister-in-law agreed. But she added a condition.
She’d need to be paid $50 a day. She explained that she’d have to come over twice a day to feed the cat and clean the litter box.
$50 a Day for Cat Sitting
Her sister-in-law called it a whole production. Since she’d have to go to another apartment, she felt the job deserved payment.
The woman told her that felt unfair. She’d been watching her sister-in-law’s dog for free for months.
Her sister-in-law said dogs are different because they just hang out with you. Cats, she said, are actual work because you have to travel to someone else’s home.
Dogs Versus Cats
The explanation didn’t make sense to her. Walking a dog twice a day and keeping it from damaging her apartment felt like far more work than feeding a cat.
Still, she didn’t argue in the moment. She simply said okay.
But the conversation stuck with her. It felt like the rules had changed once she was the one asking for help.
Fourteen Days Added Up to $700
That night, she went through her texts with her brother and counted every time she’d watched the dog. It came to 14 days since February.
She made a list of each date and put $50 next to it. The total came to $700.
She sent the list to her sister-in-law. If $50 a day was the rate, she figured it should apply both ways.
Apologize or Hold Firm
Her sister-in-law went to the woman’s brother and said she was being petty and ridiculous over a cat. Her brother texted the woman and said she’d taken it too far.
The woman reminded him that his wife set the rate herself. Now her sister-in-law isn’t talking to her, and her brother wants her to apologize and let it go, leaving her wondering whether pointing out the double standard was fair or whether keeping the peace matters more than the $700 she never planned to collect.
