Years of Supporting His Mother

His mother has never worked. For years, he’s been the one helping cover the family’s expenses.

He worked retail to pay bills and keep things afloat. Instead of saving for his own future, much of his income went toward supporting his household.

College Funds Spent on the Family Home

At one point, he used his college savings to help save the family home. Money meant for his education went toward keeping a roof over everyone’s heads.

Giving up those funds can have long-term costs. It can mean taking on more student loans, delaying school, or missing out on opportunities that could have increased his earning power.

Thousands in Unpaid Loans

Meanwhile, he watched his mother spend money on takeout and other non-essentials. When he questioned it, she got upset.

He suggested she get a job, but she said retail work wasn’t appropriate for someone her age. Over the years, he’s loaned her thousands of dollars on top of his share of the rent, and she’s never paid any of it back.

Whenever he said no, she cried about becoming homeless or called him names. The pressure made it hard to set limits.

His First Place

Recently, he moved out for the first time. Having his own space gave him a sense of freedom and happiness he hadn’t felt in a long time.

That relief didn’t last. His family’s financial problems followed him into his new life.

An Eviction Money Didn’t Stop

Last month, he loaned his mother a large amount of money to stop an eviction. Even so, his parents received an eviction notice.

She asked for more money and promised it would be the last time. He paid again, but the landlords accepted it and kept moving forward with the eviction.

He’s now deep in loan debt. Each time he helps, another emergency seems to follow, leaving him with less money and more stress.

A Request to Show His Bank Account

Now his mother wants even more. She’s pressuring him to show his bank account to the court in hopes of slowing the eviction.

He refused, and she’s angry. His dad has already moved to another state to be closer to work, leaving him as the person she leans on most.

A Rent-Free Offer She Turned Down

A friend offered his mother and younger brother a place to stay rent-free for three months. The goal was to give her time to save money and get back on her feet.

She turned it down, saying it was beneath someone her age and asking if he thought she was a bum. He says the place is decent, in a good neighborhood, and would at least give them a safe place to live.

A Younger Brother Caught in the Middle

The hardest part for him is his younger brother. He worries his sibling could end up without a stable home through no fault of his own.

He’s exhausted from feeling like his mother’s bank account. Now he’s trying to figure out how to stop carrying her financial weight without feeling responsible for what happens to his brother, and whether saying no is the only way to finally protect his own future.
