Cutting Ties in 2021
She stepped away from her mother for many reasons that built up over time. By 2021, she’d decided that keeping her mom in her life was doing more harm than good.
It wasn’t a decision she made lightly. Ending contact with a parent rarely is, and it came after years of pain she couldn’t keep carrying.
A Childhood Wound
When she was about 5 years old, she was abused by her biological father. She believes her mother saw something was wrong at the time and asked her about it.
At that age, she didn’t have the words to explain what was happening. She’s carried the belief ever since that her mom should have stepped in to protect her and didn’t.
A Mother Who Wouldn’t Back Her
In 2019, she pressed charges against her father. He’s now serving time in prison.
During the court process, as the family weighed whether the case would go to trial, her mother told her she would deny ever seeing anything or asking about it. Hearing that from her own mom, at a moment when she needed support most, was another deep blow.
Losing Her Brother
In 2021, she lost her brother. He had also been hurt by their father, and his death left a hole in her life that hasn’t closed.
Grieving him has been its own long road. She’s spent years trying to hold onto his memory while also dealing with everything else her family has put her through.
An Empty Grave
For a long time, she visited her brother’s grave every few months. It was one of the ways she stayed connected to him.
Then she learned her mother had moved his resting place about 100 feet away without telling her. For months, she’d been visiting a spot where he no longer was, and finding that out felt like losing a piece of him all over again.
A Wedding on the Horizon
She’s getting married next year, and planning the wedding has stirred up feelings she didn’t expect. Moments like trying on a dress or walking down the aisle are the kinds of things many people picture sharing with their mom.
That’s left her feeling guilty. Even after everything, part of her feels bad that her mother won’t be there.
A Mother Getting Older
Her mom is getting older, and she knows time isn’t unlimited. Life is moving forward for her, with a new marriage and a future she’s building, and that’s made her think about what she might regret later.
She wonders whether the guilt is just a natural longing for a mother on a day like this. She’s even described it as unresolved feelings about her mom that she can’t quite shake.
An Invitation Still Undecided
She hasn’t decided whether to invite her mother. On one hand, she remembers every reason she walked away, and on the other, she can’t stop feeling like she might be making a mistake.
For now, she’s caught between protecting the peace she’s worked hard to build and the hope that her mom could be part of this chapter. Whatever she chooses, she knows it will shape how she remembers a day that was supposed to feel like a fresh start.
