Do you have a favorite sitcom that you put on to laugh or keep playing in the background as comfort noise? It’s funny how often we can watch the same thing without getting sick of it. I have several, and I am happy a couple made this fan list. After polling the internet, here are the top-voted sitcoms ever.
1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The number one-voted sitcom is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “If you took any of the five central characters in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and dropped them into any other comedy, they would be the funniest character in that show. Yet, when you put them all together, they’re still more incredible than the sum of their parts. A magical show,” shared a final commenter.
2. Arrested Development
“Arrested Development. So many layers of funny. Weird stuff and so many funny throw-away-jokes in the background and from the off-screen dialogue,” stated one.
“They rewarded the viewers with those background Easter eggs. For example, a quick camera pan across the model home kitchen would reveal a glimpse of a blue handprint in the background. They added to the laugh count for sure.”
3. Malcolm in the Middle
“Malcolm in the Middle,” another shared. “The more times I rewatch the series, the more I realize how incredible this show is. The jokes are intelligent, and the characters are all flawed yet enjoyable to watch. I love so many relationships in that show: Hal and the boys, Malcolm and Reese, the boys and Francis, Francis and Lois, and Lois and Hal. It never had a bad season.”
4. Golden Girls
“Golden Girls for the win. Even 30 years later, it is a laugh a minute. Most sitcoms have cheesy humor or a lot of time between laughs, but Golden Girls delivers even on repeat viewing.”
5. Seinfeld
“Seinfeld, for sure. It’s not even close. No contest, pun intended,” replied one. Another added, “It’s hard to argue for any other show, literally every show since Seinfeld owes some of its success to Seinfeld.” Finally, a third said, “So many classic episodes. It’s been almost 25 years since the last episode aired, and its influence on the culture is still present. I love George Costanza.”
6. Community
One exclaimed, “Community. The only true answer. Six seasons and a movie!” “This has easily won out as my go-to rewatch,” another confessed. “The 2-part pillows and blankets episodes are personal favorites because Troy and Abed make me believe in a slightly more magical world.”
7. Scrubs
“I love Scrubs for this category. It’s hilarious, often touching and sad, great characters move from politically incorrect to socially aware and back again – with a killer finale,” someone shared. “I love Scrubs. It’s such a good show. As you said, there are funny episodes, then ones that pull your heartstrings, all in all, a great show,” another agreed.
8. Parks and Recreation
Another stated, “Parks and Recreation. I cry laughing during this show. So funny.” Several others agreed and quoted the show, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Don’t teach a man to fish, and you feed yourself. He’s a grown man fishings not that hard” – Ron Swanson.
9. Fawlty Towers
“Fawlty Towers. Not a single weak episode. Not a single flat joke. The cast wasted not a moment of screen time. The series is a masterclass on writing and executing a comedy series,” someone suggested.
10. The Office U.S. Version
“The Office. Watching The Office is like a nice warm blanket on a cold day. It’s so comforting no matter when I watch it,” someone confessed.
“It’s snowing outside. You got a hot chocolate on your Best Boss coffee mug. You sip it, and it’s the perfect temperature. You get comfortable with your blanket on your favorite sofa. You turn on the TV and put The Office on, and Scott’s Tots plays. Perfection,” another agreed. Others argued for the U.K. version.
11. 30 Rock
Finally, someone stated, “30 Rock. I know this is very subjective, but if you’re as objective as possible regarding the quality of the writing, this is the correct answer. My husband and I just finished our dozenth or so rewatch of the whole series, and we still keep finding new jokes we hadn’t noticed before.”
Honorable Mentions: Blackadder, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The IT Crowd.
